Equipment and Uniform Requirements
Hickey Karate Center offers a number of martial arts and fitness programs. Each program may require specialized martial arts equipment or uniforms in order to fully participate. You are responsible for purchasing the appropriate equipment and uniforms for the programs in which you choose to participate. We have selected a standard reasonable cost uniform for our classes. These are not the cheapest on the market but are reasonable and hold up better then the lower quality products. Students may purchase higher quality (more expensive) products if they choose.
Little Tigers - White Karate Uniform (gi) optional and available at the dojo.
Dragon Club - A dragon club package is included in the initial sign-up and includes White Karate Uniform (gi), book, merit badge program.
Karate - White Karate Uniform (gi) or optional summer uniform consisting of white karate-gi pants with a black Hickey Karate Center Black Belt Club T-shirt is required. For free-fighting class, hand mitts, chest protector, helmet mouthpiece and for males a groin cup are required. We do not permit contact while free fighting regardless of the gear worn. Shin pads with instep pad and foot protection are also suggested. Demo team members can wear demo team t-shirts on days the demo team meets.
Judo/Jujitsu - Judo-gi and jujitsu hand mitts and a mouthpiece are required. Most students get the white or unbleached judo-gi. It is suggest you get a double weave gi as single weave do not hold up well.
Martial Fight - Participants should bring their own hydration and a towel. Additionally, every participant should have their own training gloves (MMA-style training gloves), hand wraps, and jump rope - traditional or speed type. We have some equipment to get you started, but you will need to obtain your own. For the gym/dojo workout, participants should wear a short-sleeved t-shirt or compression top and loose-fitting athletic shorts (to just above the knee). UnderArmor, Nike, and Adidas are the most popular brands and they are good quality. For safety and decorum: No sleeveless shirts, no tank-tops, no hoodies, no midriffs, no urban-style clothing with accessories, no shirts with lewd or inappropriate images or words, no short-shorts, etc. It’s ok if the compression shirts fit tight, but they have to have sleeves. Participants should also remove all jewelry worn on the hands, feet, and around the neck and waist – rings, bracelets, wristwatches, bangles, necklaces, toe rings, ankle bracelets, belts, etc. This is to avoid injury to the participant and to the equipment and jewelry during the striking workouts. Proper grooming is a must. The indoor workouts are done barefoot. If participants necessarily have to wear something on their feet, it should be something that won’t tear up or mar the padded floor. See the instructor for permission.
Yoga - Yoga mat required. Other supports may be recommended by the Yogini (female yoga instuctor.)
Weapons - Purchase of weapons and swords will be only for training purposes only. Sharpened weapons will not be allowed for training. There is a great variety in quality and authenticity of weapons and thus cost. Students may select from a wide variety of weapons and costs. See Hanshi for recommendations.
Please see the dojo staff if you have any questions about uniforms, sparring equipment swords or other weapons.
